The following terms are used extensively in grid data management issues and guides. Links are given to glossary entries in the GridPP wiki.

aliasAnother term for Logical File Name
File CatalogThe file catalog is the grid middleware server which maps LFNs to SURLs, i.e., tracks the real physical locations of the logical file names.
GUID"Globally Unique Identifier" or "Grid Unique Identifier". The file catalog assigns this unique name to files on the grid, making the appropriate mappings to LFNs and SURLs.
LFN"Logical File Name" A user friendly (and user defined) name of a grid file. There can be several LFNs (aliases) for one file.
ReplicaA copy of a file on the grid (even a single copy of a file can be called a "replica").
SFN"Storage File Name" - another term for SURL.
SURL"Storage URL". A Storage URL, pointing to the physical stored version of a file on a grid storage element.
TURL"Transport URL" (or Transfer URL). A URL that a storage element issues for a SURL which can be used to retrieve or store data.
