GridPP ver4.0

Tue 2 Mar 2010

Last week GridPP's management submitted their proposal for GridPP4. With the current phase of GridPP coming to an end in 2011 this latest plan lays out the roadmap for the project from April 2011 to March 2014.

It will soon be 10 years since the first bid was submitted for the infrastructure which would eventually become GridPP. In that time the UK has created a stable infrastructure which provided, in 2009, almost 20% of computing time used by the WorldWide LHC computing Grid. Now with the LHC up and running and in production for the next two years it is time to secure the future of GridPP for UK scientists.

David Britton, GridPP's project leader, has been involved in all of the bids since 2000. He is happy with how the project, and its focus, has subtly shifted in the last decade "We have come a long way since the original proposal in understanding both the technical and sociological solutions to the LHC computing challenge. Our Tier-1 competes effectively on the world stage and our Tier-2s continue to lead the way in many areas. Over the years we have tuned this distributed system to achieve a balance between on-site user support and local engagement of institutes, with the advantages of larger managed facilities such as quality of service and access to expertise. The challenges in the coming year will be support the LHC as it reaches a steady state of data-production and to respond to the changes heralded by the formation of the European Grid Initiative last month. With the quality of the people we have engaged in GridPP we are confident that we will take it all in our stride".

The proposal consists of the maximum allowed 40 pages; complemented by 27 pages of appendices. It will be presented to the PPRP on April 15th with a site visit in early May. The final decision is expected before the Autumn.
