How to add a new GridPP Member

This page explains how to add a new member to the GridPP website access control system. This provides GridPP specific information beyond the generic GridSite Admin and User Guides.

1. Find out their exact certificate DN

Ideally they can tell you this themselves. The DN is case sensitive, and by default the UK e-Science converts the common name part (ie their normal name) to all lowercase. However, some users and local Registration Authority people don't like this and put in the correct capitals. So check.

If you can't find out their DN, or there is some doubt, then for users with UK e-Science certificates, you can use the list of valid certificates http://ca.grid-support.ac.uk/certs_valid.html (if you do this, make absolutely certain you've got the right person!) From this list, use the links from the 4 digit serial numbers to download the certificate and examine it to get the DN. (eg with openssl x509 -in cert.pem -text at the Unix command line.)

2. Put their DN into their home institute list

Each GridPP member institute has a DN List which should contain all the DNs of its local GridPP members. These lists appear on https://www.gridpp.ac.uk/dn-lists/

If you have the correct permissions, you can use the Manage Directory button at the bottom to make changes. Each institute has its own subdirectory, and GridPP website admins (and local site admins) can modify the groups defined within it. For each institute, there is a group with just DN List URL prefix and the insititute's name (eg https://www.gridpp.ac.uk/dn-lists/manchester) Each new member of GridPP should be added to that list for their institute. If you're looking at the manage page for that institute's directory, you can use Edit to add them to the main institute DN List.

Once an hour (currently, at 30 minutes past the hour), the list of all GridPP members is generated from the institute member lists.

3. List of GridPP People

This list at https://www.gridpp.ac.uk/members/ is generated directly from the institute lists, rather than the whole GridPP list itself. This is done each time the page is viewed, so changes take place immediately.

That list is intended to be used by humans trying to find a particular GridPP member (and to give visitors a sense of the scale and geographical spread of the GridPP collaboration.) Consequently it holds the common names, institute name and email addresses of members.

When a new person is added, their details are derived from their home institute DN List and the CN in their DN. This normally works ok, but should be checked. Go to https://www.gridpp.ac.uk/members/ and check they appear as expected. The person in question or GridPP website admins can use the modify button on the persons own page to add more details.

4. Experiment affiliations

Members individual pages can include a list of experiments they are a member of. This line is generated each time from the experiment membership lists on https://www.gridpp.ac.uk/dn-lists/ and you need either to be a website admin or an admin for one of the experiment groups to add experiment affiliations.
